Irrigation Tips for Healthy Drought Tolerant Plants
Cacti and succulents are tough, low-maintenance plants—but knowing when to water and how to acclimate them to sunlight is key to their success.
Watering Tips
Most cacti and succulents thrive when their soil dries out completely between waterings. Before watering, ensure the soil feels dry and hard to the touch, with no remaining moisture. If the plant appears shriveled, it needs water. However, a plump, firm plant can tolerate dry soil for a few days without issue.
In their natural habitat, cacti and succulents receive water only periodically. This cycle of drought and hydration strengthens them, making occasional dryness beneficial. Unlike other plants, succulents store water for future use, but they continuously absorb moisture when available. Because of this, they actually prefer to be root-bound, which helps regulate their water intake and prevents overhydration.
If you plan to keep your succulents outdoors, remember to acclimate them slowly to full sun. This helps to prevent sunburn and stress.
Start in an area that receives shade for at least 50% of the day, preferably in the afternoon.
Over the next 1-2 weeks slowly introduce them to more and more sunlight.
Outdoor succulents and cacti may dry out faster than indoor plants. Keep an eye on the soil and adjust watering as needed.
